J-1 Research Scholar Guide

Everything you need to know about the J-1 Research Scholar visa — from eligibility for both researchers and host organizations to the application timeline and process.

What is the J-1 Research Scholar Visa?

The J-1 Research Scholar visa is a up to 5-year non-immigrant visa category designed for research professionals to contribute to research and R&D projects at U.S.-based companies and organizations.

Unlike student visas (F-1) or work visas (H-1B), the J-1 Research Scholar program emphasizes knowledge exchange and international collaboration in research and development.

Host Organization Requirements

The J-1 Research Scholar visa is a partnership between the researcher and the host organization. Both must meet specific criteria.

Research or R&D Focus

The organization must be engaged in research or R&D work that is relevant to the researcher's background and expertise.

Physical Location & Infrastructure

The host must have a physical presence and sufficient resources (facilities, equipment, mentorship) to properly host a J-1 Research Scholar.

Sponsorship Agreement

The organization must agree to sponsor the researcher and comply with J-1 visa program regulations.

For Employers & Host Organizations

If you're an organization interested in hosting J-1 Research Scholars, you become part of an international knowledge-exchange initiative. Your organization sponsors qualified researchers, provides mentorship and workplace resources, and supports their visa sponsorship through a designated program sponsor.

Hosting J-1 Research Scholars allows you to access global talent, support international collaboration, and strengthen your research capabilities without the complexity of traditional employment-based visa sponsorship.
